Squirrel Tail (Hang Kra Rog) is perhaps the most well-known of all Sativa Thai landraces. Often sold or mislabeled under the name ‘Thai-Stick’ it was one of the many varieties of Cannabis grown in the Thai-Lao Region of Isan, popular since the Vietnam war, when GIs were exposed to it during R and Rt. This is the original weed GI’s generally smoked in Thailand and Laos, but not the same as the horrid weed of Laos and Cambodian borders packed into pesticide riddled seeded, immature brick weed.
Squirrel Tail is gorgeous, a pure landrace. It was most famously grown in Nakhon Phanom area of Thailand during the heydays of Thai-Stick, but is now found all over Thailand. The sativa was planted by farmers all over the region, fueled a huge demand for Cannabis in the local and SE Asia region, but the original is still considered to be that which is grown in Nakkhon Phanom. Local minorities and communities outside of the main towns in the area were the main cultivators, and they grew this particular sativa in large fields cleared on the hills of Thailands East, NE. Often they would pack their air cured bud in the jungle, then wrap around bamboo skewers and export these. These buds around sticks were known as “Thai Sticks”.
Thai stick is not a strain, but a common way of bundling the cannabis around bamboo skewers, usually the weed wrapped around these skewers was bush weed, most likely the most prevelant, was Squirrel Tail. But over the years it could have been almost any weed that just happened to come into the hands of drug smugglers that rode on the popularity of Thai sticks. Bush weed is usually heavily seeded and doesnt have big thik coals, instead, plants are huge, with log thinner kolas than todays hybrids. This Sativa is grown from seed Jay picked up in the area. This is a true landrace remains true to genetics found in the area, it has low levels of THC compared to today’s THC monsters, but comes with a complex and unique blend of terpenes that the cannabis conniseur will appreciate. Each smoke blends the unique Thai mix of mango, tobacco and an almost slightly sweet spice.
This is a pure sativa that comes from seeds that carry the terroir of the south east asian jungles within them. It comes from the far reaches of Thailand, isolated from interference of growers looking for bulk weight and high THC. It is undiluted by decades of crossing crosses, this sativa carries the environmental fingerprint that expresses distinct characteristics and traits the Thai jungles impart, yet meticulously grown by the artisan growers at Mastertokes that brought it to Canada.
Make no mistake, this strain grown with love in indoor environments where it is not seeded and is grown much faster, away from the soils of it’s Thai sisters. It is different from the weed grown in the late 60s, grown organically in world-class indoor facilities, by master growers that seek to preserve its original unique charactaristics. This Thai landrace gives an experience long lost in the Asian jungles. This is not your grand daddys weed, but a modern take and preservation attempt on a timeless classic that is itself the grand daddy of most of the weed we call legends today, and one that must be experienced by any cannabis conniseaur or lover or true OG flower.
